Lydia Johnson Dance has been consistently praised for its distinctive choreography, which uses components of ballet woven seamlessly into a contemporary dance vocabulary. The Company has received an extraordinarily positive level of critical acclaim from The New York Times, The New Yorker, Oberon's Grove and Backstage Magazine for its annual New York Season. Lydia Johnson Dance has performed at the world renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.
LJD's Tenth Anniversary Season performance at SOPAC will include the preview of a new dynamic work, last year's critically acclaimed Dusk, set to music by Henryk Gorecki, as well as favorites from the repertory such as Dream Sequence set to music sung by Dean Martin, The End of The Movie, set to songs by Cake, and In Conversation set to Philip Glass's Violin Concerto.
“Lydia Johnson became overnight one of my favorite contemporary choreographers...her dancers took the floor and within seconds I knew I had found something I loved...for me one of the most moving dance experiences in the last decade." Philip Gardner, Oberon's Grove, 2009
"And Lydia Johnson Dance, a company based in South Orange, N.J., performed a show of Johnson's works that demonstrated perhaps the most organic choreographic fusion of ballet and modern-dance techniques ever invented." Lisa Jo, Sagolla Backstage Magazine, 2009
"In dance that challenges the mind as well as the heart, Lydia Johnson often isolates and reworks components of classical ballet technique to create a sense of life flowing unhurriedly over mysterious human stories." Jennifer Dunning, The New York Times, 2005
