Lydia Johnson Dance returns to SOPAC for the kick-off event of Celebrate South Orange 2012. Artistic Director Lydia Johnson has choreographed two new works, which will be previewed at SOPAC. Joining Lydia Johnson Dance are guest dancers Attila Joey Csiki and Reed Luplau (Lar Lubovitch Dance Company) and Max van der Sterre (formerly of New York City Ballet).
The program includes two new dances by Lydia Johnson. Crossings by River is set to musical excerpts of contemporary Argentinean composer Osvaldo Golijov's The Dreams of Isaac the Blind, St. Mark Passion, Kaddish, and Tenebrae. A new work set to the Three Part Variations of J.S. Bach is currently untitled.
Rounding out the program is the Lydia Johnson Dance company favorite Summer House. Set to Philip Glass's Piano Etudes and Poems for Solo Cello, Summer House is inspired by memories of summer vacations in New England.
This presentation will include a Q&A with choreographer Lydia Johnson and company. Audience members, both children and adults alike, will be invited onto the stage to learn a dance phrase with LJD Company members.
The resident dance company of SOPAC, Lydia Johnson Dance has been praised by The New York Times, The New Yorker and Backstage Magazine. The company has performed at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Downtown Dance Festival and Peridance Capezio Center in New York.
